News ticker: Chiayi Airport to handle direct cross-strait flights, Taiwan rice to arrive in Fuzhou

Chiayi Airport in southern Taiwan will become the 10th airport on the island to handle direct cross-strait flights by the end of next year at the earliest, the Civil Aeronautics Administration confirmed July 24. Direct flight services across the strait were launched three years ago. Forty-one destinations in mainland China are currently served.

The first batch of Taiwan rice, weighing 20 metric tons, is slated to arrive in the mainland Chinese city of Fuzhou July 27, the ROC Council of Agriculture said July 24. Taiwan has approved the export of 50,000 metric tons of rice a year. So far this year, 1,000 metric tons have been exported, with the three main overseas markets being Japan, Hong Kong and Australia, according to the council.
