June 19, the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic have signed Mutual Abolition of Visa Requirements Agreement, according to the Russian Embassy in China.
Russian Ambassador to China Sergey Razov and Minister for Administration and Justice of Macao SAR, China Florinda da Rosa Silva Chan (陳麗敏) signed the agreement on behalf of the governments.
The agreement provides an opportunity for Russian citizens and permanent residents of Macao to travel on the mutual visa-free basis for up to 30 days.
Last year, more than 16 thousand Russian tourists visited Macau.
Canceling visa requirements will contribute to the strengthening of friendly relations, cooperation and enhance exchanges, including in the tourism sector between Russia and these Special Administrative Region of China.
After a similar intergovernmental agreement with another Special Administrative Region of China – Hong Kong in July 2009, the number of Russian citizens visiting Hong Kong has increased by 3 times.
It is also assumed that the signing of the Agreement will increase interest among Russian air carriers, primarily from the regions of Siberia and the Far East, to the implementation of direct flights to Macau on a regular basis.
The agreement will come into force when both parties complete the necessary internal procedures.
