“A Simple Life” by Hong Kong award-winning director Ann Hui has grossed more than 50 million yuan (nearly 8 million U.S. dollars) at the mainland box office just one week after its release.
This figure puts the film at No. 2 at the box office for the 10th week in 2012, only behind Hollywood blockbuster “War Horse”.
A celebration for the film was held in Beijing yesterday with lead actor Andy Lau, actresses Deannie Yip and Qin Hailu.
Benefiting from a great reception from both critics and audiences, “A Simple Life” achieved an impressive opening day gross of 13 million yuan. It set a record for Hong Kong-made art-house films at the mainland box office.
Directed by Ann Hui, Bona’s “A Simple Life” garnered the Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor Awards at the 48th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards along with the Best Actress Award at the 68th Venice International Film Festival.
