Ma Xiaotian holds talks with Russian deputy chief of general staff

Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), held talks with Gen. Serdyukov, the visiting deputy chief of general staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, in Beijing on February 13, 2012.

Ma Xiaotian expressed warm welcome to the visiting delegation led by Serdyukov and said that in recent years, the cooperation between the Chinese and Russian militaries had enjoyed sustained, healthy and steady development. The leaders of the two militaries have conducted several meetings and the two sides have achieved a series of important accomplishments in communications at all levels in various fields.

Ma Xiaotian said that it is in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples for the two militaries to enhance strategic mutual trust and elevate the level of cooperation, which is also conducive to safeguarding the peace and stability of the region and the world at large. He hoped that the two militaries could continue to make joint efforts in the new year and constantly promote the development of the friendly relationship between the two militaries to deeper levels and broader fields.

Serdyukov said that developing military relations with the Chinese military is a top priority for the Russian military in foreign communication and cooperation. The Russian side is ready to work with the Chinese side to keep enhancing communication, constantly explore new cooperative mechanism, and consolidate and deepen pragmatic and friendly cooperation between the two militaries.

Duan Duanwu, deputy commander of the Beijing Military Area Command of the PLA, and Ci Guowei, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ministry of National Defense, were present at the meeting.
