Xi Jinping: Sino-US relations are one of the most important bilateral relations in the world

The Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said on Sunday in a written interview with the Washington Post that the Sino-US relations were one of the most important, dynamic and promising bilateral relations in the world.

Xi put it this way before his visit to the United States. He left Beijing on Monday to complete the official visit to the United States, Ireland and Turkey.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the U.S. President Nixon’s visit to China. The leaders of both countries, statesmen with extraordinary wisdom and vision, have reopened the door of Sino-US exchanges forty years ago, Xi said.

The China-United States relationship has made historic progress, bringing benefits to both countries and their people.

“In 2011, trade between China and the U.S. reached $ 440 billion, against $ 7.7 billion in 1985 when I visited for the first time in the United States,” recalled the Chinese Vice President.

Everything that took place over the last forty years shows that healthy and strong Sino-US relationship is important for both countries and for peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and world, he said.

During the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to the United States in January 2011, the leaders of both countries agreed to establish a cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.

It is difficult to avoid conflicts and disputes in our trade and economic interactions, said Mr. Xi. The key is to properly handle the disputes through coordination based on equality, mutual benefit, understanding and prevent such conflicts and disputes to undermine the overall interest of Sino-American trade cooperation, he noted.

China and the United States share more common interests in the Asia-Pacific than in any other region. In recent years, the two countries have closely coordinated their efforts in the framework of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Regional Forum of the Southeast Asian Association (ASEAN). We have strengthened the communication and cooperation on regional economic integration, fight against terrorism, poverty and transnational crimes, prevention of natural disasters and regional hot issues, which greatly contributed to peace and prosperity in Asia Pacific.

The vast Pacific Ocean has enough space to China and the United States, Xi said, welcoming the constructive role of the United States in promoting peace, stability and regional prosperity. He also hoped that the United States fully respect and take into consideration the vital interests and the legitimate concerns of the Asia-Pacific.

Today, the negative impact of the global financial crisis and debt crisis in Europe continues to expand. Regional hot issues occur regularly, traditional and nontraditional threats to security are intertwined. In this circumstance, it is vital for China and the United States to communicate, coordinate their efforts to cooperate more closely and work together to play a constructive and responsible role in maintaining and promoting peace, stability and development of the world, said the Chinese vice president.
