China reiterated its support for the efforts of the Eurozone and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to overcome the sovereign debt crisis after the respective changes of government in Greece and Italy.
“We have seen changes of government”, “but these are internal affairs of those countries,” said Liu Weimin, the spokesman of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a news conference in reference to Greece and Italy.
However, the official said that “China supports the efforts of the European Union (EU) and the IMF to overcome the sovereign debt crisis. Hope them can overcome the current difficulties to restore confidence in markets and promote economic recovery as soon as possible.”
Greece announced on Friday a new coalition government, led by former vice president of the European Central Bank, Lucas Papademos, while on Sunday the Italian president, Giorgio Napolitano, named Mario Monti as head of emergency government following the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi.
