China’s First Aircraft Carrier Varyag Starts Sea Sail

Eighth voyage of the Dragon, first trial of Varyag, China’s first aircraft carrier left its shipyard at Dalian Port in northeast Liaoning province on Wednesday morning to start its first sea trial.

The 300-meter-long ‘Varyag’ is being built at the port of Dalian in the north coast of China. Although construction began in the eighties for the Soviet Navy, it was never completed. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the rusty hull was in Ukraine before being acquired by a company in China connected with the Army, which sought transport to Macau and turn it into a floating casino. Ukraine disarmed it and removed its engines before selling it to China.

On March 3, 2002 the aircraft carrier Varyag officially arrived in Dalian, China, docked at the West Port of Dalian, then it took 9 years 5 months and 7 days, a total of 3447 days to initiate the formal trials.

China started the renovation work immediately after the aircraft carrier arrived in China, the Ministry of Defense began to disclose relevant information about the aircraft carrier in the end of 2008, making it a hot topic in recent years. China officially confirmed the rehabilitating of the aircraft carrier in July.

Military sources said that the first sea trial was in line with schedual of the carrier’s refitting project and would not take a long time. After returning from the sea trial, the aircraft carrier will continue refit and test work.
