China to Open Investigation into the Train Accident

The Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has ordered an investigation to provide rapid and transparent information on the collision of two high-speed trains and has promised that the Government will take measures to improve transportation safety.

“The investigation should discover the facts and prosecute those responsible in accordance with the laws and regulations,” said the prime minister Wednesday in a statement.

The investigation must be “open and transparent” and the results should be made public, said in the note. The government must make “decisive steps to improve security completely,” he added.

The accident occurred Saturday in the province of Zhejiang in the east, killing 39 people. Before starting the investigations, Beijing expelled three officials of train service on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways investigates the causes of the accident and has ordered a review of safety in train operations.

State media report that The train numbered D3115 was hit by lightning, which caused the fail of electronic security system, then rear-ended by train numbered D301.
