Chile has already self-proclaimed as the gateway of China to South America. Xi Jinping, Chinese vice president, will meet Chilean President Sebastian Pinera today to sign a long list of bilateral agreements between the two countries. In 2010, trade between Chile and China have increased by 44%, representing $ 25 billion.
Matias Mori, president of Santigao chiléo-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said that “The visit of Mr. Xi is very important. It is a very positive sign, knowing he has only visited four countries during his trip abroad.” Chile is the last step of the global journey of Mr Xi who visited Italy, Cuba and Uruguay.
Chile has been the first country in South America to recognize China as market economy and the first to sign trade agreements with Beijing government. “This is a unique country in the history of Chinese diplomacy. Political ties are historic and are expected to last much longer. Compared to its neighbors, Chile has further developed links with Asian countries. Chileans have a taste for relations between Asia-Pacific.” said Sun Hongbo, an expert on Latin America from University of Shanghai.
